1 Star cylinder + 2 Star handle = 3 Star security
Introduction
In our A guide to 1 star and 3 star-rated cylinders, we explored how cylinders achieve 1* and 3* standards. This guide is to help you understand how the 2* rating works and the interaction between the cylinder, handles, and other security hardware.
Background
TS007 was a standard that was introduced because of a collaboration between the Door Hardware Federation, The Glass and Glazing Federation, and Secured by Design. The standard allowed for cylinders to be designated as either 1* or 3*, depending on which standards they achieved.
A 3* cylinder provides the highest level of security, under TS007, without the need for additional security hardware or handles.
1* + 2* = 3*
A 1* cylinder provides protection against attack but does not satisfy the additional requirements imposed by the 3* standard, the most famous of which is protection against snapping.
Handles (and certain other security hardware) can be designated as 2*. We will explore the requirements of this standard in more detail below.
When a 1* cylinder is fitted in conjunction with a 2* handle, TS007 3* security is achieved.
How does a handle achieve a 2* rating?
For security hardware to receive a two-star rating, the official wording requires that “it shall not be possible to withdraw the deadbolt of any of the test lock assemblies to its normal disengaged position when tested in accordance with PAS 24:2016, A.3, security hardware and cylinder test, parts 1 and 2.”
In addition, and if relevant, the security hardware must meet the requirements of BS EN1906:2012 (any hardware not covered by this standard can still be evaluated by the Technical Committees of the DHF or GGF).
For the purposes of this guide, for handles to meet the 2* rating, they must be able to meet the standards set out in PAS24, by withstanding attack in a test environment.
How can I spot a 2* handle?
2- star handles will have additional security features to protect the keyway, enlarged backplates, and more robust fixings.
Why should I consider a 2* handle?
In some circumstances, fitting a 3* cylinder will achieve the TS007 standard in an easy swap. However, there are circumstances where you may also need to change handles, so it makes sense to upgrade at the same time.
It is also worth noting that, it can be cheaper to fit a 1* cylinder with a 2* handle, rather than a 3* cylinder.
Which 2 star handles are available?
TSSPRO stocks both the Mila Pro Secure and the Brisant 2* handle in a range of colours.
Handles are available in either short or long backplates, with options for lever/lever or lever/moveable pad configurations.
We stock TS007 2* handles in white, black, polished chrome, and gold in the Brisant range

And white, satin chrome, polished chrome, and polished brass in the Mila range.

Does 2* + 3* = 5*…?
No, fitting a 2* handle with a 3* cylinder still achieves the maximum rating of 3*. However, it would not hurt!
